One of my favourite things to talk about, try on and generally drool over is vintage prom dresses! The proper full on dresses with tulle layers, frothy netting and gorgeous colours, well ladies…I’ve hit the Mother load!!

Vintage Vortex is a shop on Etsy, the handmade and vintage website for all you create souls out there to sell your carefully sourced gems and crafty bits and pieces made with your own fair hands. Caryl Young is the woman behind the shop with an eye for beauty, and has sourced some of the most out of this world stunning dresses! Based in Toronto, Canada, she has had a life long passion for vintage. After the realisation that her bulging closets were getting out of hand, she decided to turn this passion into a business and started selling her items locally and via high end vintage shops.

The demand for such stunning garments was immense and as well as launching  ‘Vintage Vortex’, Caryl also has an eBay shop and regularly supplies dresses to shops in Australia and right here in London, on Carnaby Street! The feedback this lady receives on her stock speaks for itself and at most dresses coming in at under £400, you can’t go wrong with the price either, postage fees are also reasonable and are around £22 ($35 Canadian dollars).

Caryl’s dresses are a mix of white 50s wedding dresses and colourful prom dresses, great if you would like your maids to wear one too, although you don’t need to stick to the traditional white on your wedding day. The dresses have such an outstanding wow factor that they would all be perfect as brides gowns, why not be daring and wear one with a pop of colour. I wore pink on my wedding day and people are still commenting on it, and don’t forget, originally wedding dresses were never white! Blue was a very popular bridal colour back in the day.

New dresses are added weekly on average, but there is no fixed turn around so keep checking back regularly for that dream dress! Also, if you have really fallen in love with one of these dresses and money is a bit tight, Caryl will happily keep it to one side for you for 30 days to give you time to raise the funds.

I think I have fallen a little in love with this woman and her amazing shop of wonders. Right, now to organise that 50s themed party so I have the perfect excuse to buy one myself!
